In 2017, EXTENT Heritage were commissioned to prepare a Heritage Interpretation Plan and Statement of Heritage Impact as part of the redevelopment of the Ashmore Estate, Erskineville. The study area relates to the early industrialisation of Erskineville and Alexandria, forming part of the former Metters Ltd factory site. Metters was known for manufacturing domestic appliances that dominated the Australian market from 1890 to the 1970s.

Significance

Ashmore Estate is representative of the early industrialisation of Erskineville and Alexandria, utilised by the Metters Ltd company as a factory complex for the manufacturing domestic appliances that dominated the Australian market from 1890 to the 1970s. The site is also associated with 1919 substation which was used to power Metters, as well as a local fire station (now demolished) that functioned from the 1890s to the 1950s. Its close proximity to three heritage conservation areas, Cooper Estate, Erskineville Estate and Malcolm Estate also plays a significant role in the site’s significance.

The Project

Extent were commissioned to develop a Heritage Interpretation Plan and Statement of Heritage Impact as part of a mixed residential and commercial redevelopment of Ashmore Estate located in Erskineville. The Statement of Heritage Impact involved in-depth research into the history and significance of the site, site and fabric analysis, and heritage impact assessment of design documentation. The Heritage Interpretation Plan involved the identification of the historic and social values, key historic themes, the identification of an interpretive vision, and recommendations for interpretation devices and their locations.
