A proposal was prepared to undertake repair and refresh works to the verandah and roof of the Dubbo Station Masters Residence. The residence, which is a rare and impressive building of its type, takes a commanding presence in front of the railway station. The proposal to replace the roof cladding with corrugated steel was assessed as having a negative impact on the significance of the place. A quantity surveyor was engaged to demonstrate that reinstating a new welsh slate roof cladding, which would have been the original intent for the building, would have a better heritage and long-term economic outcome.
Dubbo Railway Station is one of the few groups of buildings on the NSW railway system constructed from stone. The State heritage listed, 1881 Station Master’s Residence on site is a rare example of a major late Victorian period station complex in NSW that was constructed in stone. It is a fine example of railway design, which has become an important element within the railway site and the townscape of Dubbo generally.
In March 2015, Futurepast Heritage Consulting Pty Ltd were commissioned by Sydney Trains to prepare a Statement of Heritage Impact for the Station Master’s Residence located at Dubbo Railway Station. The purpose of the report was to analyse proposed roof and verandah repair works to the rare late Victorian period station. Tasks included:
Historical researchHistorical research
Site inspection and analysis
Review of relevant legislation and planning controls in relation to the project
Assessment of heritage impacts of the proposed works
Provision of project recommendations
Continued inspection and design/heritage advice during works
