  • Sydney Trains

In 2015, EXTENT Heritage (formerly Futurepast Heritage Consulting Pty Ltd) were commissioned by Sydney Trains to prepare a series of heritage reports in response to the proposed decommissioning of Dunmore Railway Station and opening of a new railway station further north towards Shellharbour. Dunmore Railway Station and Residence is Section 170 Heritage and Conservation Register item which is historically significant for its rare awningless 1887 platform building. It is one of two examples on the Illawarra Line.

Significance

The Dunmore Railway Station and Residence is of state historical significance for its rare awningless 1887 platform building, 1891 milk shed/out-of-room and central section of Platform 2, and for its early 1887 brick example of a ‘J2’ station masters residence design. The 1925 signal box, Platform 1, Platform 2 extension and moveable items are of historical significance as evidence of later upgrading of the station since 1925, and the residence is also of historical significance as evidence of late 19th century railway operational requirements to accommodate railway station staff on site.

The Project

In June 2015, EXTENT Heritage (formerly Futurepast Heritage Consulting Pty Ltd) were commissioned by Sydney Trains to prepare a series of heritage reports in response to the proposed decommissioning of Dunmore Railway Station and opening of a new railway station further north towards Shellharbour. Reports included:

  • Statement of Heritage Impact
  • Conservation Management Plan
  • Photographic Archival Recording
  • Adaptive Reuse Assessment

Heritage works aimed to protect and conserve the site after the decommissioning process, and to investigate its potential for adaptive reuse. Consultation was undertaken with local council to ascertain the viability of the station’s reuse.
