In 2015, EXTENT were contracted by the Australian Technology Park Sydney Limited to prepare a Management Plan for moveable heritage items in the Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops Machinery Collection. This collection is a State-significant collection of historic machinery and tools dating from the late 19th century to the 1980s. The collection housed at ATP enhances the significance and understanding of the Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops and is a key element in interpreting the history of the site. The Management Plan provides an overarching framework for managing the Collection.

Significance

The Eveleigh Railway Workshops complex is of exceptional heritage significance to the state of NSW for its major contribution to the establishment, operation and growth of the NSW railways. In addition to the complex of extant railway structures within the precinct, the site holds an exceptional and rare collection of historically and technically significant heavy machinery and tools forming the moveable collection, the majority of which is housed in the ATP buildings on the south side of the main railway line.

The Project

Extent Heritage were commissioned to update the inventory of the Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops Machinery Collection, and prepare a Management Plan that offered some strategic collections management guidelines for its conservation. Tasks included:

  • Update the inventory with the assistance of ATP volunteers.
  • Analysis of the issues with managing the conservation and maintenance of the collection.
  • Prepare a strategic Management Plan for the collection to assist in planning and prioritising future conservation works.
