Maitland Town Hall

Project overview

  • Photographic Archival Recording
  • Undertaken and completed in 2016
  • Approximately $8K

Client

  • Maitland City Council

In 2015, EXTENT Heritage (formely Futurepast Heritage Consulting Pty Ltd) prepared a Photographic Archival Recording for the State heritage listed Maitland Town Hall in response to major upgrade works. The town hall is the best example of its type within the Upper Hunter region, and comparable to other regional town halls of the 1880s Boom period.

Significance

Maitland Town Hall is significant within New South Wales as representative of nineteenth-century civic centres with grand, Victorian architectural form. The town hall is the best example of its type within the Upper Hunter region, and comparable to other regional town halls of the 1880s Boom period. It is of regional significance for demonstrating the growth, prosperity and regional importance of West Maitland from the 1880s. The continuation of the original council chamber functions provides evidence for the civic stability of Maitland and has associations with key events and people in Maitland’s municipal history.

The Project

In June 2015, EXTENT Heritage (formerly Futurepast Heritage Consulting Pty Ltd) were commissioned by Maitland City Council to prepare a Photographic Archival Recording for Maitland Town Hall. The purpose of the report was to record the present state of Maitland Town Hall, within its context as an 1890s Town Hall for community activities and meetings as well as local government. The main hall and stage was to be substantially upgraded, and this report served as a permanent record of the place prior to that work being undertaken. Photos were taken before, during and after the works.
