In 2017, Extent Heritage was commissioned to prepare a series of heritage reports for Mount Victoria Railway Station. Mount Victoria Railway Station Group is of State significance as a large complex of mid-late nineteenth and early twentieth century railway buildings that clearly illustrate the development of railway facilities in the Blue Mountains area.

Significance

Mount Victoria Railway Station Group is of State significance as a large complex of mid-late nineteenth and early twentieth century railway buildings that clearly illustrate the development of railway facilities in the Blue Mountains area. It is one of the most substantial railway station complex in the Blue Mountains, retaining evidence of former passenger, railway staff and depot uses. The station was developed from the 1860s onwards to meet the increased traffic from tourism to Mount Victoria itself and eventually to accommodate passengers travelling between Bathurst and Sydney. Today, the station precinct contains built and archaeological heritage relating to its early use, through to the duplication and expansion of the railway and onto the electrification of the line.

The Project

Extent provided a package of heritage reports to assess the rich and complex significance of the station, and to facilitate sympathetic change on site. The reports included:

  • Conservation Management Plan
  • Heritage Interpretation Plan
  • Moveable Heritage Audit
  • Statement of Heritage Impact

Overall the aim of the work was to minimise and mitigate potential heritage impacts arising from planned remodeling works and various other maintenance and refurbishment projects at the site. Undertaking this project as a single package allowed Extent to create cohesive, effective documentation and conservation recommendations for the station.
