A proposal was prepared to install an accessible ramp providing access to the station platform. I addition, the proposal also sought to refresh internal areas of the station building. At this time, some cracking had been observed within the building. The proposal was modified to include all remediation works.

Armidale Railway Station is an item of State significance, particularly for its grand 19th century first class station building. The building exhibits significant architectural and aesthetic attributes that reflect the continuing importance of Armidale as a major regional centre and significant railway station.

The Project

In May 2015, Extent Heritage was commissioned by Sydney Trains to prepare a Statement of Heritage Impact for the main station building at Wellington Railway Station. The purpose of the report was to analyse the heritage impact of proposed internal and external repair works. Tasks included:

  • Historical research
  • Site inspection and analysis
  • Review of relevant legislation and planning controls in relation to the project
  • Assessment of heritage impacts of the proposed works
  • Provision of project recommendations.
  • Continued inspection and design/heritage advice during works.
