Senior Heritage Advisor
Fenella Atkinson is a senior heritage advisor with 20 years’ experience in Aboriginal and historical cultural heritage management, with a focus on archaeology. She has worked principally in New South Wales, but also in Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria, and overseas in Papua New Guinea. She has experience in directing both Aboriginal and historical archaeological excavations, and is qualified to direct excavations of State-significant sites
according to the Heritage Division criteria.
Fenella has a particular interest in Aboriginal community consultation, post-contact Aboriginal heritage and the identification of contemporary Aboriginal cultural heritage values. She is developing this interest further through tertiary studies in the field of anthropology. Fenella is involved in public outreach through her role as NSW co-ordinator of National Archaeology Week; and in the development of the discipline through her role as national co-ordinator of the Student Support Fund established by the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists.
