Ian Travers specialises in archaeology and cultural heritage management and has a strong background in field investigation, having worked both as a field archaeologist and consultant in Australia, the UK, Europe, and the USA. Ian’s breadth of experience has included working closely with business analysts, tourism specialists, ecologists, landscape architects, engineers and agriculturalists, as well as other heritage professionals in the completion of complex projects. Ian has developed and led several large ground-breaking cultural heritage studies involving diverse clients, multidisciplinary teams and numerous community stakeholders.
Ian is experienced in facilitating community engagement with heritage, and he has managed a number of high profile projects with, and on behalf of, Victorian Aboriginal communities. He has a long involvement with the City of Melbourne’s Aboriginal heritage programmes, most recently including preparation and enacting of the City’s Indigenous Heritage Action Plan 2012-2015.
Prior to joining Extent Ian held a senior position with Context Pty. Ltd., during which time he worked on and led a number of major heritage projects within Melbourne and Victoria. Ian has also worked in the UK as a senior consultant for an international engineering and environmental consultancy and was responsible for the provision of heritage consultancy services to support planning applications and for the supervision of numerous environmental impact assessments.
He is experienced in the management and direction of archaeological excavations, and in providing related heritage services in relation to engineering projects, such as monitoring conservation works on the drystone Bessiebelle Sheepwashes, at Toorourrong Reservoir and at Dight’s Falls weir.
